Equine Red Light Therapy Poll Cap | 660, 850 & 940 nm
Description
Quick answer
The VanHorn Equine Red Light Poll Cap is a cordless LED cap designed to sit over the poll and upper-neck area. It uses 660, 850, and 940 nm wavelengths. Hold the power button for three seconds to cycle the built-in pulse options; the blue button light remains visible even when the near-infrared LEDs are not visible to the eye.
VanHorn 940nm Equine Poll Cap
I built this one around a pretty simple engineering question: if I’m putting light over the poll and upper head, why would I settle for the same basic two-wavelength recipe everyone else keeps recycling? I wanted a cap that actually fit the area well, stayed put, and used three distinct wavelength bands on purpose — 660 + 850 + 940 nm.
Product Specifications
• 660 + 850 + 940 nm wavelength combination
• Lighted section approximately 25.6” × 14”
• 151 LED packages
• Three removable stretchy Velcro straps for adjustable positioning
• Rechargeable battery system
How Do I Turn It On & Change Wavelengths?
Turn the battery on first using the button on the battery before turning on the poll cap.
Use the built-in power button on the poll cap to cycle through the wavelength selections:
1. All wavelengths — 660 + 850 + 940 nm
2. 660 nm visible red light only
3. 850 + 940 nm near-infrared only — these wavelengths are not visibly bright, so this setting can look like the lights are off even though the NIR LEDs are operating
How Do I Use Pulse Mode?
Press and hold the power button for approximately 3 seconds to enter pulse mode. The pulse selections cycle through all wavelengths, 660 nm only, and 850 + 940 nm near-infrared only. Remember that the NIR-only setting will not look bright to the naked eye.
Why 660 + 850 + 940 nm?
I looked at the common 660/850/850 setup and had the same thought I have with a lot of products: why waste one of three emitters repeating the exact same wavelength? So I kept 660 and 850, because they both have a reason to be there, and used the third channel for 940 nm instead. That gives me three distinct wavelength bands in every LED package instead of two.
I’m not interested in adding specs just because they sound impressive. If I’m going to engineer a product, I want each component there for a reason. 660 + 850 + 940 was a deliberate design choice, not a copy-and-paste one.
850 nm and 940 nm are outside the visible spectrum, so it is normal for those LEDs not to appear bright red. The 940 nm output is invisible to the naked eye.
940 nm: What Does the Research Show?
Human fresh-cadaver research measured transmission of 940 nm infrared light through 4 cm of head tissue. Because this study examined head tissues specifically, it is particularly relevant to the engineering rationale for including 940 nm in a poll-area product, while still not being a direct equine clinical trial of this device. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33166061/)
Equine research comparing 800 and 970 nm found that wavelength, hair, skin pigmentation, skin thickness and clipping all affected transmission. The 970 nm wavelength is a nearby longer-NIR wavelength rather than the exact 940 nm used here, but it demonstrates that wavelength selection and equine-specific tissue characteristics matter when delivering NIR light through a horse’s skin. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27580111/)
In a direct 810-vs-940 nm laboratory study of periodontal-ligament-derived stem cells, the 940 nm / 2.5 J/cm² condition increased viability and proliferation under the tested protocol. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35293711/)
These studies support the wavelength-selection rationale. They do not establish that this consumer device diagnoses or treats neurological disease, and results depend on dose, irradiance, geometry and tissue.
How Do I Start?
For a new animal, start conservatively — around 10 minutes at a lower setting — and increase gradually based on tolerance and your veterinarian’s guidance. Supervise the horse throughout every session.
Charging, Care & Safety
Use the supplied charging components and keep the battery and connections clean and dry. Turn the device off before cleaning, wipe with a dry cloth, and store away from moisture, excessive heat and dust. This product is intended for general wellness and supportive care and is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
