Quick answer

The VanHorn Equine Red Light Bell Boot is a cordless, targeted LED boot for routine wellness support around the hoof, pastern, and lower limb. Its 18-inch semicircle light section uses 660, 850, and 940 nm wavelengths, and its stretchy Velcro strap adjusts to fit. It is sold individually and fits either side.

VanHorn 940nm Red Light Bell Boot

I didn’t want to make another generic light pad and hope it happened to sit somewhere useful. The hoof and lower limb needed something compact, cordless, adjustable, and actually shaped for the job — so that’s what I built, with 660 + 850 + 940 nm instead of the same old duplicated near-infrared setup.

Product Specifications

• Sold as one bell boot
• No left/right difference
• 660 + 850 + 940 nm wavelength combination
• Red-light section is a semi-circle approximately 18” long
• Stretchy Velcro strap for adjustable fit
• Includes the removable magnetic charging adapter I designed to help keep the charging port clean and protected from debris

Why 660 + 850 + 940 nm?

I looked at the common 660/850/850 setup and had the same thought I have with a lot of products: why waste one of three emitters repeating the exact same wavelength? So I kept 660 and 850, because they both have a reason to be there, and used the third channel for 940 nm instead. That gives me three distinct wavelength bands in every LED package instead of two.

I’m not interested in adding specs just because they sound impressive. If I’m going to engineer a product, I want each component there for a reason. 660 + 850 + 940 was a deliberate design choice, not a copy-and-paste one.

850 nm and 940 nm are outside the visible spectrum, so it is normal for those LEDs not to appear bright red. The 940 nm output is invisible to the naked eye.

940 nm: What Does the Research Show?

Human fresh-cadaver research measured transmission of 940 nm infrared light through 4 cm of head tissue, supporting its ability to travel substantially beyond the skin surface. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33166061/)

Equine research comparing 800 and 970 nm found that wavelength, hair, skin pigmentation, skin thickness and clipping all affected transmission, and measurable energy reached both the superficial and deep digital flexor tendons. The 970 nm wavelength is a nearby longer-NIR wavelength rather than the exact 940 nm used here, but the study is directly relevant to the way longer-NIR light behaves in equine tissue. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27580111/)

In a direct 810-vs-940 nm laboratory study of periodontal-ligament-derived stem cells, the 940 nm / 2.5 J/cm² condition increased viability and proliferation under the tested protocol. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35293711/)

A 2025 LED study comparing 625, 810, 940 and 1050 nm found the tested 940 nm / 52 J/cm² condition produced particularly strong effects on cartilage-matrix markers and improved outcomes in its mouse knee-osteoarthritis model. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41163191/)

These studies support the wavelength-selection rationale. Results depend on irradiance, dose, treatment geometry and tissue, so laboratory protocols should not be assumed to be identical to any consumer-device session.

How Do I Start?

For a new animal, start conservatively — around 10 minutes at a lower setting — and increase gradually based on tolerance and your veterinarian’s guidance. Supervise the animal throughout every session.

Charging & Port Care

Please use the supplied magnetic charging adapter. It was specifically added to reduce repeated wear on the charging port and help keep dirt and barn debris out of the connection. Damage caused by improper use or a damaged charging port may affect warranty coverage.

Care & Safety

Turn the device off before cleaning. Wipe with a dry cloth and store away from moisture, excessive heat and dust. This product is intended for general wellness and supportive care and is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
